Miss World Cancels Swimsuit Section

ORGANISERS of the annual Miss World pageant have announced plans to eliminate the swimsuit segment of the competition, citing lack of purpose as the reason.

“The organisation has decided to take itself out of the swimsuit world because it isn’t the path they’re trying to take,” said Chris Wilmer, the national director of Miss World America/Miss United States organisation. “It’s not just a beauty contest, it’s beauty with a purpose. There didn’t seem to be a purpose to have the swimsuit.”

Miss World – which is the oldest international beauty pageant – was originally called the Festival Bikini Contest and was established in England in 1951 by Eric Morley, who wanted to lift spirits following the end of Second World War. The bikini was replaced with a more modest swimsuit after the contest drew complaints, and the segment of the show has existed ever since. However, Wilmer is keen that, in the future, the pageant shouldn’t just be based on appearance.

“Miss World should be a spokesperson who can help a community. She’s more of an ambassador, not a beauty queen,” Wilmer continued, reports The Washington Post. “It’s more about the outreach and what a woman could do with a title like Miss World.”

The decision by Wilmer and his colleagues comes at a time when the traditional beauty pageant and the exposure of the female form are much-discussed topics. The recent Victoria’s Secret show in London resulted in ample column inches debating the feminist issues underlining the extravaganza, while many stars have made public their support for the Free The Nipple campaign, an equality initiative that stands against the illegality of topless women.

ALTAROMA has announced its decision to cancel its scheduled Couture showcase that was slated to run between January 31 and February 2 next year. The organisation, which usually holds two fashion weeks annually, stated that it cannot afford to put on both this year due to lack of public funding.

“I hope that through the members’ commitment we can break this deadlock,” Silvia Venturini Fendi, AltaRoma president, told WWD.  “I’m afraid that we might miss a useful occasion to reconfirm the trust in public involvement aimed at supporting development and giving hope to one of the most important productive sectors for the future re-launch of our country.”

See the shot that inspired Kim Kardashian’s Paper Magazine cover

Kim Kardashian Jean Paul Goude 1stdibs

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

For their winter issue, Paper magazine set out to “break the internet” with the help of Kim Kardashian. Given that they managed to rack up over five and a half million search results for “Kim Kardashian Paper Magazine” in less than 24 hours, it seems like they did alright.  Our angle on this? The maestro behind the much-maligned, much-appreciated shot is the French contemporary photographer and designer, Jean-Paul Goude.

For the Paper cover, Goude re-created what is arguably his most famous shot, “Carolina Beaumont, New York, 1976” (above left). Often referred to as “Champagne Incident,” Goude’s picture is characteristic of the artist’s playful, winking approach to sexuality. The French-born Goude began his career in magazines — he served as art director for Esquire during the ’70s — and later stepped behind the lens to create frank, colorful images that flirted with the boundary between fine art and advertising. In fact, “Carolina Beaumont” comes from an eight-page Esquire editorial entitled “The French Connection” that aimed — in the pre-Photoshop era — to explore the changing standards of beauty vis-a-vis physical proportions. Obviously, the conversation is still happening today.

We’re fans of both images, and appreciate any occasion to surface the name of a deserving talent. Luckily, Goude’s original image is available on 1stdibs from dealer Hasted Kraeutler. Shop it now. For Kim’s version, hit your local newsstand — or just visit the now-broken Internet.

This Week’s Wow: New York Fashion Week Gets the Boot

Fashion
nyfw-lincoln-center

In this weekly feature, InStyle’s Fashion News Director Eric Wilson shares his favorite fashion moment of the week, and explains how it could shape styles to come. Look for it on What’s Right Now every Friday.

The Moment: Ending a long and bumpy residency at Lincoln Center, New York Fashion Week’s major hub for runway shows will vacate the premises following the Fall 2015 presentations in February. While the move, to an as yet undetermined location in September, has long been expected, a settlement in the New York City courts this week underscored just how unwelcome designers have been there, and how unhappy the rest of us have been about it.

RELATED: Taming Fashion Week, Or Trying To

The Friends of Damrosch Park, a neighborhood group that protested the pollution and greenery destruction that resulted from the twice-annual affair, had sued IMG, the company that produces Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, because the runway production blocked access to a public park for many weeks of the year. IMG, after complaints that many designers and guests were unhappy there, too, had already begun exploring new options.

Why It’s a Wow: For years, New York designers have sought to find a unified home for their runway shows, succeeding in the early 1990s by opening the original tented affair in Bryant Park. Those shows, which operated under many names (7th on Sixth, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Olympus Fashion Week, General Motors Fashion Week), became so popular that the designers eventually outgrew the space and then moved to what were described at the time as classier digs at Lincoln Center.

PHOTOS: What InStyle Editors Wear to NYFW Shows

Along the way, as with most golden geese, the event began to lose its luster, partly the result of a glut of questionable marketing events that sought to capitalize on American fashion’s newfound popularity. Major designers decamped to offsite locations. These days, when we speak of New York Fashion Week, we rarely speak of Lincoln Center, so, to put it mildly, the eviction represents a big opportunity for IMG, for the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and for fashion in general.
