The Disney feature, based on Hans Christen Andersen’s The Snow Queen, made mega bucks at the multiplex. In fact its $1.24 billion haul didn’t just make it the highest grossing animated adventure of all time, but also the fifth highest grossing movie in film history. Alongside its commercial success Frozen also reaped its fair share of critical acclaim too, with a slew of awards including two oscars.
The Lion King is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The poignant Disney film opened in the US on 15 June 1994 and instantly became a classic.

Worldwide gross: $1 billion
Before Frozen usurped its role on top of the box office, Pixar’s toy box threequel had reigned supreme as the highest grossing animated adventure in movie history. Not only was Woody and co.’s big adventure the biggest film of 2010, it also became the first animated movie to gross more than $1 billion at the box office. Not bad for a bunch of toys.
